'Cire De Deuil (Mourning Wax)' - 2023

'Cire De Deuil (Mourning Wax)' - 14mm Rope, Copper, Found Wood and Soy Wax

This piece was created for an exhibition entitled 'This Darker Path' at St Paul's Church Winchester and was used as a symbol of Jesus being laid in his tomb before resurrection. The piece uses the motif of Cire De Deuil (Mourning Wax) which were used in the South of France, specifically in the Pyrenees and the Basque Country. Used in order to materialise the soul of the deceased, members of the close family burned thin cord of wax regularly throughout a year. The ritual wax symbolised the presence of the deceased which is something I wanted to bring to this piece being such a spiritually significant narrative. Although not spiritual myself using tradition, object and historical narrative to create something that can spiritually connect to others is something I value.
