'((UNEARTHED)) Objects (Detail)' - High-Heat Fired Ceramic, Dirt, Nylon Rope and Olive Oil

The piece consists of a collection of high-heat fired ceramic vessels, net made from synthetic rope, dirt and scented oil. The dirt mixed with the ceramic is a way to bring the materiality of clay back to its origins in the Earth but also uses the ideas of archaeology/anthropology and ‘unearthing the past’. This is emphasised by the use of the cross pattern ‘emerging’ from the dirt occasionally. This piece also includes a structure made from synthetic rope which weaves in and around the dirt and pots. The structure came from early making and research in the project surrounding the use of repentant clothing in Christianity (Cilice). The act of making these net structures is what drew me to repeat the motif in this piece. Its relevance in this work is to tie it to the contemporary world with the material and create a narrative of present/past within the object(s). Because of the reference of the coronation ampulla, I chose to incorporate the holy anointing oil used within it so I made my own using the recipe taken directly from the bible.
